Law & Disorder 1: Shoplifting

Watch this clip about police responding to a shoplifting incident in London.

As you watch the clip, think about the following 3 questions:

1) How well or badly do you think the police handle the stopping and searching of the 3 suspects?

2) In what ways do the suspects make things worse for themselves?

3) Listen carefully to the final minute of the clip. If you were a police officer, how would YOU feel after arresting people for the crime of stealing clothes from shops like New Look?

  1. The police drove too fast through busy streets, but apart from that, they acted quite respectfully and reasonably.

The suspects should have put away their mobiles and listened to the police.

Personally, I think it's depressing to arrest young women for stealing a few cheap clothes when there are much bigger crimes being committed.

  3. 1. After watching it a second time i think they handled it in a good way. I liked when PC just took the phones from the girls.

    2. They make it worse for them selfes by resisting and arguing and not listening.

    3. Good and a bit annoyed since the girls where probably very annoying to deal with.

  4. 1. I think they handled it pretty well. A police officer must be hard and show who's the boss to earn the respect.

    2. The suspects do not seem to want to cooperate and show no respect at all. They don't care and also hold on to their mobiles although police tell them to put down the cell phones several times.

    3. As a policeman, I had become quite irritated with the girl's attitude. Then there are more important things to take care of than chasing girls that thieves cheap clothes.

  5. I think the policemen/women acted respectfully even though they did not get any respect from the 3 suspects. Seems like they searched the suspects gentle, even though the video was edited, so we could not see the entire photage of the stopping.

The suspects made it harder for themself by being disrespectful, talking back and interrupting PC Lucas, and using their mobile phones when the PC tried to get their attention.

If I were a policeman, I would have been happy, justice would have been served. It wouldnt matter to me if they shoplifted from New Look or from some higher quality store. A crime is a crime.

  6. I think the policemen/women hadled it very nice and smoothly they asked the girls to walk up to the wall and take their hands out off thier pockets and tryed to explain why he stoped them.

The suspects mad it harder for themslevs when they resisted and just ignored the police by useing their phone and answering back like they havent done anything even saying they havent bought anything from the store and then have cloths in their bag from the stor.

i would be a bit annoyed since the girls behaved in such disrespectfull manner and on top of that they stole such cheap clothing that its just sad but justice got serverd so a bit proud would i feel

  7. 1. With that bad attitude from the shoplifters I think the police could have been tougher on them. Scare the brats a bit.

    2. By behaving disrespectful by not putting away their cellphones and lying about the thefts.

    3. I would feel that my time was beeing wasted on a petty and stupid crime since the theft was about luxury items and not necessities.

  8. I think the police did a proper job with the shoplifters. Something that is common when it comes to arrests is that the police often has a power-abuse attitude but this police officers handled the case in a good way.

I think that the shoplifters could have done it easier for themselves if they would hav confessed of stealing when they got caught and also they had no reason to be rude and have a attitude towards the police.

Im not sure how I would have felt but I'm sure it's not fun in any way to arrest people for shoplifting even tho they deserve a punishment for doing it. I think that parts of me would have hoped on being wrong when arresting someone.

  9. The police needs to be more kind and begin with a conversation instead of an argument
