Law & Disorder 2: Begging

Watch this clip about police responding to a begging incident in London.

As you watch the clip, think about the following 3 questions:

1) Begging is an offence, but in practice, how do the police deal with begging according to PC Ashman (at the beginning of the clip)?

2) How well or badly do you think the police handle the beggar?

3) If you were a police officer, how would YOU feel after arresting this particular man for begging?

Post your comments below - you can post anonymously (but include some sort of sign so we know who you are!). Keep an eye on your fellow commentators - respond (respectfully) to them.

  1. 1. They try to be careful when it comes to begging since its a sensitive subjekt

    2. From what it sounded like the beggar had just been there for a few minutes but then they say its a spot where he has been before so i honestly dont know what to think.

    3. Bad because its horrible that beggars exist to begin with.

  3. 1. The police are always trying to be careful when it comes to begging since it's a sensitive topic.

    2. I think they should be shown a bit more certainty because the beggar was quite aggressive.

    3. I'd felt a little pity for the beggar but it is also part of the job as a police officer.

  4. The policemen/women tries to be carful when it comes to begging since it's a sensitive subject.

I think the policeman handled the beggar good, it seems like he gave him a warning earlier, and the beggar did not go back that day, but came back later anyways. So the beggar knew that it's an offense to beg. The policeman were polite to the beggar even tho the beggar acted disrespectful.

If I were a policeman I wouldnt feel that good, but since it's an offense it's a must do, a crime is a crime. Begging mostly occurs when people do not have any money, or do not have anywhere else to turn to.

they did handel it well a calm and polite conversatiton with the begger even tho the begger where a bitt angry

as a police man i would feel a bit sad arresting that person begging even tho it was a crim its not like a person choses to beg for money life can be rought

  6. 1. They try to handle it carefully since it's a sensitive subject and they look at the nature of the begging.

    2. I think they handled it well, they showed him respect although he was unfriendly.

    3. He was rude and abusive to the public and also threatened the person that reported him begging so when it comes to this particular man I would feel that I made the streets safer.

  8. Once again i think that the police handled it pretty good, specially since one of the officers had met the begger before and told him what the deal was. In other words they kept their cool instead of flipping out or being rude to the begger.

Me personally would probably have been more annoyed because of the begger, specially if i would have met him before like one of the cops did in the clip. Sure it's a sencetive subject but should be handled just like the cops did in the video.

  9. I think this is such a complex question that I dont want to say anything about it now. Maybe when I understand more economics and how our society works.
